The Watch The Red Series Book 1 eBook Amanda Witt

Every element of life in the walled city of Optica is tightly controlled by the ever watchful Wardens. Citizens accused of breaking the rules suffer public humiliation or execution. Red (named for her hair color) is a rebellious teen. Skirting the rules, she tries to learn the true reason for Optica, why she’s considered “different,” and what the mysterious Guardians plan for the citizenry.

The world building in this novel was extremely well done. Optica is dark and depressing—very Orwellian. The society is tightly controlled by Wardens who are armed and in most cases devoid of sympathy for the general population. Video cameras constantly observe the citizenry. At night, a searchlight mounted on a high central tower like the eye of Mordor swivels its beam across the streets. The main character, Red, was likable enough to keep me rooting for her as she lurched from one risky encounter to the next.

I had two issues with the story. The first is personal—there were a lot of named characters, and I found it difficult to keep them straight in my head. I know not every reader is challenged in this manner, but I am.
My other issue was with the way information about the genesis of Optica and the true allegiances of the secondary characters close to Red was unresolved. While the author offered many hints, she kept salient information back, and this teasing technique pulled me out of the story a number of times.

This is first in a four book series, so a certain amount of set up is to be expected, and of course the objective is to encourage the reader to move to the next title. But most of the story takes place in and around Optica, and the novel ends elsewhere with a cliffhanger of enormous proportions, leaving many threads created in Optica hanging and open. I’d have liked more resolution before being moved on to the next part of the story.

The Watch The Red Series Book 1 eBook Amanda Witt Reviews

Once I started reading, I didnt want to stop. And at the end.... I want more. I will be reading the next Red Series book.
I have read the first two books in the series so far and LOVE it! I can't wait for the next two to come in the mail! It is loaded with intrigue, excitement, and lots of suspense. Totally fantastic.

Order it. Read it. Love it.

You won't be disappointed. The Red Series is one for the books! (Pun intended.)

Have fun with it - it won't let you down!
I especially appreciated the well developed, likeable characters. I could identify with many of them & that's important to me. Recommended for readers young & young at heart.
From Red’s first curfew-breaking run at night, the suspense doesn’t stop. This is a dystopian novel with a strong female lead. Although this description could fit a number of novels, this is a fresh and engaging story. Witt’s characters come to life. Optical is a world with depth and dimension. The pace of this story makes it a page-turner with mysteries that go deeply into the fabric of the story.

Although this is a series of four books, you don’t feel that one book is merely a setup for another. Yes, you want to keep reading. But a mystery is revealed in the last pages of each book which gives each novel a satisfying conclusion. The trip has been worth it. The quest has discovered something hidden and satisfying, even though the quest continues.

Like a good dystopian novel should, the reader may ponder why is this a broken world? What makes human existence meaningful and hopeful? What kind of world do we wish to build for ourselves?

If you are concerned that this is an indie published series, because you think this will mean it is in need of a good editor and better author, don’t be. Witt is a talented author, and this is a high quality publication.

This is a great book and series. Highly recommended.

For users, the table of contents is hyper-linked.
I have read the entire series, and it was full of all the inticing elements that won't let you put the book down. It was very entertaining.
If you are a fan of dystopian fiction or mysteries, I highly recommend this book. I was hooked from page one!

This story moves along at a great pace, building character development as it goes. The plot initially seems familiar, but it soon breaks the pattern of other teen dystopian series. There are plenty of twists to keep you from guessing exactly where things will end up.

Red, the teen age protagonist, is a main character that is easy to relate to. Her adventures in the "big brother" society created by Ms. Witt are so engaging that I was downloading the second book within a minute of finishing this one!
I just loved everything about this book! From the suspenseful plot which doesn't reveal all of its secrets at once, to the well-developed characters and world building that pull you into the story and keep you engaged all the way to the very surprising ending, The Watch is a wonderful start to The Red Series and a great read for young and old alike.
